The 4 Pillars of Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy that is based on 4 principles:

  • Structure and function are interrelated. This means that when the structure of your body is off, you won't be able to function as optimally. This can manifest as difficulty sleeping,  poor breathing and digestion, headaches, slow healing, low energy levels, etc. Essentially anything that might bother you through the day might be tied to your body's structure.
  • The body is a unit. The body is a connected unit of function - it is not separate pieces tied together. Because of this, the pain you experience in one area might be actually be coming from another area all together. Osteopaths do full body assessments to see where the root cause of your pain is actually coming from. We treat your body as a whole, not just your symptoms.
  • The body is self-healing. Your body has everything in it that it needs to heal itself, and it heals through blood-flow. When there are essentially "kinks" in the system it prevents blood from performing its healing duties.
  • Treatment is based on these principles. As your osteopath I take these 3 above points into consideration during your treatment. I work WITH your body to improve your structure, and improve its self-healing capabilities. I look throughout for the root cause of your issues and remove the issue so you can experience pain-free, optimal living.

What does treatment look like?

During your treatment I will be moving your body around to assess and treat any mobility restrictions I find. To some this feels like gentle stretching. There is no "cracking of joints" involved with treatment - although cracks may naturally happen during treatment as we release tension around the joints.

There should be no pain or discomfort during treatment. If there is any, let me know and, and I will go about treatment a different way that is more comfortable for you.

During the treatment you remain fully clothed.

Who can benefit from treatment?

Anyone can benefit from treatment, from young children to elderly! Through treatment patients have experienced:

  • Relief in acute and chronic pain
  • Increased mobility
  • Improved breathing
  • Better athletic performance
  • Improved digestion
  • Better energy levels
  • Improved sleep
  • Less painful and more regular menstrual cycles
  • Reduced headaches
  • Improvement in urinary incontinence
  • etc.

After the appointment

The real treatment actually occurs once you leave my office - your body takes on the treatment I gave it, and performs its own self-healing over the next few days. Due to this, sometimes patients feel better a few days after treatment. Patients may also experience some soreness as the body gets used to its new changes.

I ask patients not to work out or stretch for 24 hours after their treatment in order to let the treatment take hold in their body. Light walking is awesome after a treatment though to keep things moving in the body.
